May 30

So I woke up around five to thunder and light rain, figured it would be ok and went back to bed. I woke up a bit later to louder thunder and heavy rain, it was not ok. I looked around my tent and there was water EVERYWHERE, I was surrounded by a mote. I jumped up and grabbed all my stuff. Allen my neighbor, was there with an umbrella trying to help out. What good people.

I met three other tourists in the laundry room headed to Cape Cod who helped me too. I didnt have time to air my stuff out so i just threw tent and all into the drier.

My new neighbor friends had me over for breakfast, literally about seven pounds of bacon, a huge bowl of French toast, eggs, cinnamon rolls, coffee and just pure amazingness. One of the boys didn't join us though because his friend toothpasted his belly button when he was sleeping. We all hugged goodbye and they sent me on my way.

The ride was so nice, a lot of downhill with some killer ups, but nothing like yesterday. Bryan, a boy I met on crazy guy who was going to ride with me but couldn't because of class, was gonna pick me up. But when he waved me down only about 15 miles into my ride I was surprised. He and his friend Taylor helped me load up my bike and we were on our way to Carmel NY.

His house is so AMAZING, it sits back in some hills and the backed leads to a woods and trails. His family is so nice and his mom is from Bolivia and was getting food ready for a cookout. Not much distracts me from food, but canoeing down the Hudson river happens to be one of those things. All weekend cars topped with canoes, kayaks, or trailing fishing boats have been passing me. All I wanted was to get on the water and now its happening!

Bryant and Taylor gave me a tour of all the local hills, I was tired just going up them in a car, wow.

We went to Cold Springs to hop in the river, the Hudson is HUGE! Taylor sat in front and Bryan in the back, I got the little low chair in the middle and had to stretch my arms up to paddle and was a direct target for Taylors over splash, so worth it though!

We started going under this railroad bridge into a nature preserve, the water was glass. The tide was low so we decided to turn around after bottoming out a few times.

We fought the current and made it back into the river. West Point was just around the corner, this morning I had no idea where it was and now I'm canoeing to it!

With three of us in the canoe, we were not breaking any speed barriers and every time a little boat came by we scrambled to get perpendicular with the wake, Taylor and I both thought forsure we were goin down.

We turned the corner and there it was! The place where America's future leaders are trained, according to Bryan. The campus, if that's what you call it did seem to give off a feeling of intimidation, either way it was incredible in the setting sun.

If just seeing it wasn't enough we paddled up another mile squeezing the canoe between these two rocks and got out to go for a little hike. Bryan assured us if we didn't go past a certain point there was no threat of getting arrested or shot.

It was AMAZING!

We didn't get shot or arrested.

Climbing back into the canoe Taylor went down, he was a a champ about it! That kid has some good one liners that about sent me cracking up over the edge as we dodged wakes trying to get back. The sun was setting and the river became even more beautiful.

I could defiantly be a river rat :)

And then we came home to this, I love moms!

Gosh today was great. I slept in and even got a shower before campground breakfast. Man those guys at Mineral Springs know how to take care of their guests. I had French toast, eggs, and sausage, then pancakes after I packed up and did my rounds around the campground to say thank you to all my adopted people.

It's always hard leaving a good placement good people, so when D brought me my running shoes I left at her house along with a

May 23- The Making of a Bruins Fan

The day was so horrible, I mean just freezing cold and rainy right from the get go. I woke up in a puddle in my tent and my face was so swollen I could hardly open my eyes. Packing up camp in the rain is pretty miserable, even when your face doesn't look like this...

But it got better when steve made us breakfast. We had fresh bacon from the farm, fresh blueberry sausage, home made bread and scrambled eggs with cream cheese, AMAZING. It was then at breakfast when Steve's little girl told us Stephen King grew up down the road and the cemetery that inspired him to write pet cemetery was directly across the road. Woah. If that wasn't enough the guy who's mom used to edit Stephens short stories came in and said hi while I filled up his water bottles.

We got on the road and were soaked within five minutes and so so cold and still hungry. We got into the next city and into a Dunkin Doughnuts to thaw out, dry out, unload, and re load. I didn't want to leave.

We turned onto road 35, traffic picked up, the shoulder disappeared, and construction started.'it stayed like that for over thirty miles and both Joe and I were pretty shook up from the stress of trying not to die.

We made a few more stops then were on this long stretch of road with no bathrooms and only beer cans and banana peels on the side of the road. It got to be to much And we were so hungry when we finally found a gas station, one of those connected to a house, but the old man running it wouldn't let me pee. So I sat outside in the drizzle and made pasta sides and ate chocolate instead.

Things started looking up when Joe found the chocolate my grandma gave us and we ran into a porta potty.

We were still exhausted and miserable. We were both out of clean clothes and all of our stuff was soaked, we were going to have to find a hotel in Kennybunk with a laundry mat nearby. We were getting close tongue city when we turned the corner and started climbing a hill. There was this georgous bed and breakfast looking building with people everywhere. I figured a family must have rented it out for a party. They all looked so happy despite the weather. We pass the driveway and I hear someone yell. YOU WANNA BEER? Joe turned was turned around and almost in the driveway before I had time to process the question. All we had wanted the whole crappy day was a beer.

It ended up being the guy who flagged us downs 22 birthday and the bed and breakfast looking place was his grandma's and the whole rest of the family lived on the property to. There was so much going on, so many people and food and love. They easier where we were stayin and we said we were trying to get to Kennybunk. Well this is Kennybunk! Why don't you stay here? You can sleep in the barn and set up your tents to dry out. More people came to greet us. Oh hunnies, do you need a shower? You laundry done? Are you hungry, were making beef tips on the grill. Do you like steamers are you shy? Just go right inside and introduce yourself. And if you meet Mimi giver her hugs and Nancy has the steamers.

My head was spinning, I couldn't believe it. As soon as we walked in we were bombarded with love. The house must have had fifty smiling redheads in it. Someone sat us down and put another beer in front of me and cupcakes. then I think this super chatty full of love lady, Lin, brought over a huge bowl of what they call steamers, clams. She showed us how to pull off the dark part, rinse them in salt water befor dipping them in butter and mowin down.

Joe woke up at 5:30 this morning and started packing up. I hugged him goodbye and thanked him for the week then crawled back to bed. I couldn't sleep and the owner, the nice guy with the handlebar mustache, was doing rounds and asked why I was packing up so early. To be honest it was cause I thought I needed to be out of there by seven. We got talking and he said his wife was running abroad race today in town. I got so excited when he asked if I wanted to go. So I grabbed my stuff and he had me put Phattie in the rec room and told me he'd give me am closer site.

I hopped in the car with his mom, this eight some year old woman with some sas and a sense of humor.

D was so easy to talk to. We gabbed the whole way to the race and broke into a school to get games for the campground.

May 27

So my spirits are back up, mornings are always a little tough,'transitions always are. We got to sleep in the camper and had our own bathroom, it was so nice. Both Derek's and Danielle's prom is today, prom feels like yesterday.

We said our goodbyes, packed up the food they bought us and headed out.

The morning was so beautiful and so quiet. We rode through rural MA into rural RI then into rural CT. I thought we were going to die. Eight-six degrees and CT hills kick Maine's hills butts. Even Joe had to get off and walk his bike. Our water was almost out and what we did have was warm. We took a break on the side of the road and now we are chillen at a bike shop with the owner and she is telling us all sorts of crazy stories.

As for the solo touring thing, now that the pms is pretty much out of the way I'm feeling a lot better about it. It's not that I don't get scared or nervous, cause I do. I miss the security of home and my family so much, when I think about it my eyes get all wet and I choke up a little. But hat means I have something good, and if I didn't leave them I may never have realized how good I have it.

We got pizza in stafford springs and I almost found us a place to crash, almost. So we ended up riding out to a campground. I cried the whole way. A few people stopped to talk to us but I couldn't say anything, I don't do well away from family on holidays.

The guy with the handlebar mustache at the campground was awesome! I wanted to tell him but I couldn't. I ended ip squeaking a few words out after my shower ( they were the nicest campground showers I've ever seen and HAD to tell him )

I walked around the campground and looked at all the families. A girl showed me the polliwog she caught then on my way back to camp a group of seasonals flagged me down. They fed me steak off the fire and invited me into their group. Later we had cheesecake factory cheesecake and margaritas. They tried to convince me to stay another day but I really need to get on the road and get over this transition, but I might take them up for breakfast :)

The worst person to have doubt you is yourself. I really hope it's just pms, but I don't know if I can do this, well I take that back, I know I can, I just don't know if I want to. It's lonely and gonna get lonelier when Joe goes home in a few days. Passing all the schools and neighborhoods makes me homesick. There are so many people everywhere, so many families, but not mine.

The day has gotten a lot better. The weather is so nice, sunny and almost eighty. I don't know what I'm worried about, I always travel alone. It's going to be all good :)

So this morning I woke up in bed with another girl and two HUGE U of H football players making us breakfast and cleaning the kitchen. Al (the other girl, and our savior) feels like an old childhood friend I hadn't seen in years. After breakfast, which was AWESOME, we dropped one of the guys off at class and Al took us back to the cafe to get out bikes and send us on our way.

We are in Exeter New Hampshire at Dunkin Doughnuts, go figure ;)

The ride today was ok, i miss Maine drivers, they are so bike friendly. It was eighty degrees and sunny, forty degrees warmer than two days ago... The hills keep coming but we saw a few flat patches today and they were BEAUTIFUL.

We stopped to make lunch in Derry, kind of a weird town but we were hungry ( I think towns without bathrooms in gas stations are creepy)

We really wanted to cross the border before we camped. So we got into Mass and didn't know what to do. The sun was in our eyes, if we can't see then I'm sure drivers can't see so I started scoping out houses. Saw one with a lot of kid stuff out back and a guy in the yard. I asked him if he knew of any safe places to camp then Joe just through it out there and asked if we could just pitch a tent. My jaw hit the ground, was this the same Joe as last week? Holy cow no! The guy was a little hesitant but ran it by his wife and said ok, but if anyone asked we were friends because they dont get along with the other tenant. He came out ambit later and started talking with us and so did another lady. Pretty nice people.

Some kids were playin basketball a few houses down so I went to check it out. Two seventeen year olds and a twelve year old. I must have had over fifty shots before I made one, not giving Michigan a good reputation.

May 24- Ice cream for breakfast

So this morning was full of tears. Tears of gratefulness for this family. Lin was rushing to get the horses ready and take Meg to Vermont but still had all the time to make us coffee and tell us stories about when all the hockey boys lived with them. They all loved here so much and I can see why,'so full of love and energy, she would do anything for a person and often does.

For breakfast Lin dropped us off at grandma Mimi's for here special waffle breakfast. They weren't a kidden. When we walked in from packing up our bikes there was a massive waffle piled with strawberries, blueberries, and ice cream, yes, ice cream :).

It was so nice too because Dan and Cassie stopped in to say goodbye and wish us luck before heading out for Dan's birthday breakfast. They are such good people, I have a hard time leaving them behind.

So today's a fresh start, clean clothes, full bellies, new friends and SUN! However I'm a little stressed. Joe will be heading home now out of Boston and I wasn't able to catch the kid I was supposed to ride with to D.C. I know I will meet good people and it will work out, but it is taking a toll on my stress level.

The ride so far has been beautiful, I think we even passed the Bush house. I already miss the families. I'm too emotional sometimes.

We met a couple near Kittybunk that asked us if we needed a place and invited us in for snacks. He is into biking too and did his first tour when he was eighteen. We kept going across the bridge to Portsmouth, out of Maine and into New Hampshire. A huge storm was coming so we ducked into the cafe, me a guy who hitchhiked to Flint and the waitress who is our age is taking us in for the night. I'm so happy, but just so drained.

We got pizza from the cafe for dinner and Al drove us around U of H's campus and gave us a tour before getting to her apartment. She said her roommate would be home with a buddy and they played football, but that didn't prepare me for the two MASSIVE, good looking, soft spoken boys in the living room. Al gave us a beer, i took a shower by candlelight, (i guess the last room mate took the lightbulbs when she moved out) and we all sat around chit chatting before passing out.

May 22- Union to Durham

We got up early and Dave was making this amazing breakfast in a cast iron skillet on the wood stove. We drank coffee and sat around talking before sitting at the table to eat our egg, bacon sandwiches and potatoes. Saying goodbye was hard.

It was a great riding day. Our legs were rested and our bellies full. We got along awesome and rode together. The rain held off but the hills were still brutal, even the friends we made at game night warned us about them...

I called the girl the couple said to and she hooked us up with a place to stay in Durham ME on her boyfriends farm. We didn't roll in until sundown

May 19- And It Begins...Kinda

So this entry is supposed to be in front of the and it begins for real entry, blogging from an iPhone can make these things tricky.

So today is a little wet and riding in a place full of mountains and harbors, well I'll let you figure out that one... We went to meet Justin to catch the eleven o clock boat to Cranberry Island, then realized it was on the other side of the island... We headed toward Ellsworth in the cold rain and fog then changed route and headed to northeast harbor cause Justin said he wanted to ride with us. The hills are INSANE and beautiful, cliffs overlooking the harbors.

We are at a little restaurant waiting for Justin's boat to get in and trying to dry out. It's A
Little difficult to finger type when my fingers are numb. This is a cute place, but a bit strange. It is the wealthy part of the island.

The ferry boats aren't what I expected. They are more like the wooden touring boats out of Munising than what we have at work. I'll have to do a little more investigating before jumping into this possible Job.

May 21- Slugs in Searsport- May 21st

Last night was the warmest I've been sleeping outside, that tent helps a lot! It was super wet outside this morning when we got up at six. There was a good size crawler in Joe's shoe and a few slugs trying to steal away in my tent. Now it's back to dunkin doughnuts, coffee for Joe and a place to clean up for me :) today looks like more rain, thank you Bahamas.

The fog and rain was so bad, riding into Belfast was out of this world. We got pretty lost and then Joe made the light and I got stopped. As I was turning I heard some people holler out,"where are you from!? Where are you going!?" when I hollered back florida, their arms went up in cheers. We got talking and they

gave me muffins! I loved them instantly. They had done a bike trip west to east back in 97, that's how they ended up in maine, caused they liked it so much. They asked if I wanted to stay but they were kinda close for our goal, but we swapped info anyways and hugged goodbye. I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing they were.

Joe was long gone and I was pretty lost. I met this seventh grader on his bike and we rode around town together until I found my way, which happened to be up the first hill I had to walk my bike up.

The route was so AMAZING but those hills turned into mountains. I found an beautiful lake nestled in the hills where I plopped down to eat my muffin and got talking to a sixty seven year old lady who has hiked all over England, Scotland, and other places around the world. People like that inspire me, they have a different outlook on life and seem to know what really matters and milk it for all it's worth.

I decided while eating that muffin I wanted to stay with those people. The said tonight was game night, and I love games!

I walked my bike up another hill and decided my next stop was the post office. At the top I met another family, one girl was playing soccer and the other selling eggs. The mom had done a bike trip in California. Do all the adventurous people live in Maine? She told me how to get into Camden, and I was gonna meet a hill I wasn't gonna like.

I didn't like the hill, not AT all. But getting into Camden was so worth it. Amazing bustling port city. Some of the tallships were even there! At the post office I had ten minutes. I ripped everything out of my bike as people came from all over to talk to me, one even offered me a place to stay. The post office guy was impatient but I ended up finding this pink box I almost fit my stuff in. I shed six pounds!

I got to the house and joe was in eating pizza and drinking a beer. They told us all about their bike trip across the states and we looked at there scrap book of it. They were gonna have a game night so Tracy and Dave were cooking so we helped set up.

Game night was awesome! There were so many people over, I think about twenty and all into gardening. The food was so good and everyone was so nice. They all wanted to hear about the trip and help us out. One couple said I reminded them of their daughter and gave me here number knowing she could help. They were an amazing group of people.

May 20- And It Begins, For Real This Time

Last night was freezing, I really need to invest in a warmer sleeping bag. So the cold and my fear of monsters took turns waking me up, but sayin we were in our "beds" by seven, I probably still got a good nine hours.

We got an early start on the day. We both woke up before six and had camp broke down and were on the road a little after seven. It was so so cold and foggy and drizzly. Every hill we went up would make me sweat and my glasses fog up and any slowing down or stopping to make adjustments would send me into the shivers.

Joe is the faster rider, as I enjoy putzin along and checking things out, so I let him ride ahead. It's a lot less stressful like that, I don't waste energy worrying about keeping pace or missin that pretty rock to take a picture of.

There was thick fog, so when we got to the land bridge leading off the island the bays were empty from low tide. A seagull was busy with breakfast, it would grab a clam, fly up high, and drop in on a rock.

In Ellsworth I went the wrong way down a one way, met a guy at the grocery store who told me about two guys doing a trip from Miami to Portland Maine, ON PADDLE BOARDS, and ran into a group of bikers who were surprised when I told them my bike got that loud too, but not till after dinner...

So those hill mountain things I mentioned driving through a few days back, well we found them again. I have NEVER seen so many hills in my LIFE. Then the worst one that almost made me puke ended up being the one hill we didn't need to go up, (we went the wrong way).

There is an awesome bridge just outside Bucksport. We crossed it then realized Joe left his helmet on the other side, so I climbed a cliff in the extra time :)

Both of our bikes tires needed air so we were relieved to find a bike shop in Searsport. It was a weird shop with surf boards and skateboards and bikes piled to the ceiling, but the guy was nice and let us camp out back. We hung out in the dunkin doughnuts down the road to charge our stuff and get cleaned up for bed.

So exhausted, it was a long cold wet day.

When my alarm went off at 6:30 I couldn't believe it! I didn't even remember laying down. Terry had pumped up my tires and gotten my bike on the rack before I walked upstairs. They took me into downtown Gaylord and bought me breakfast. It was AMAZING! A massive plate filled with eggs veggies and hash browns. Ann even gave me her leftovers which would be enough for my lunch and dinner.

Day 6- Cheboygan to Gaylord

I guess we drank more beers than I thought. I woke up at eleven thirty, not the seven o'clock I had planned, to a counter full of bottles and a grinning Rachel ( the, I told you so kind of mom thing grin) We made breakfast and she packed me some lunch. Andy never really got up but he didn't punch me when I went in to say goodbye.

I was on the road around 12:30. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and man it was warm.

Everyone likes to ask me if my butt gets soar, I always just smiled and told them it didn't. But man oh man today was different. The last 200 miles finally caught up to me, wedgies and a soar butt from the beginning. My body was punishing me for those beers.

I rode into Indian river and had lunch near the river, rode down 27 in the middle of no where for what seemed like up hill and forever. I think the whole way to Gaylord was uphill. I was so happy get there I could have cried, then I realized I still had twelve more miles in to the wind to where I was staying and did cry. But I ate the rest of my chocolate bar in the Koles parking lot and got over it.

It was so good to get there! Terry and Ann (my dads girlfriends parents) are so pleasant! They are also vegetarians, I don't know what they fed me but man after that killer day of riding I shoveled it in.

It was great to get a shower, but man I had a terrible sun burn with awesome tan lines on the top halves of my hands. We chatted a bit and watched this murder mystery movie before Terry and I made some peanut butter and jelly toast and I passed out.

Day 5- Mackinaw to Cheboygan

I figure while I'm in this car I could finish up blogging about the rest of my trip home. Sorry about no pictures, don't have the computer with me.

I stuck around Mackinaw during the day, got my paperwork for work all filled out, helped clean up the shack (even though Mike has it pretty spotless this year) and did a little more research for the Atlantic Coast trip.

I ended up riding to Cheboygan around seven to pick up a script and stay with Andy and his mom. It was a quick trip and first rime touring in the dark. Thank goodness Joe hooked me up with a headlight.

I love staying with Andy and his mom. Rachel makes really good food and they make me feel like part of the family.

Andy was out with some friends so Rachel and I hung out watching N.C.I.S. and she fed me pizza and Klondike bars : ) during commercials she told me the story of when she was in school and bet this kid in her class he couldn't walk from Cheboygan to Indian River. Well their teacher made a day of it and they walked. They made it thirteen miles before she picked them up and took them out for pizza.

I was just about passed out when Andy came home with Zach, another good friend from work. I was ecstatic to see him cause he joined the marines and has been away at boot camp. We started chatting, then they thought it would be a good idea to have some beers and watch Hott Fuzz, the dumbest movie in the world. What a great night!

Road Trip Day Three

So it is all of ours first time in Maine. I think maybe now my grandparents have been in all fifty states. The weather is still yuck yuck, I think this is gonna be a really wet first week, at least Joe got us some nice fenders and bags with built in rain covers.

Our first Maine stop besides the bathroom was a grocery store where me and papa went in to grab lunch for everyone. We found a nice roadside park just inside Mt. Desert island to eat. It was so Gorgeous, right on the bay and the water was baby butt smooth. We got kinda lost in and getting to Bar Harbor. We didn't know where to stay or eat so I called a friend from work. This is what he said, " we ate at this place by a corner next to the harbor and across from a park. It's white. We stayed in a place three roads in off the main road. It's a little family owned in next to a big white in". At least that's what I remember him saying. Well in the time we were lost we managed to find both of them...

I had my first lobster at what turned out to be Gayln's. It was probably one of the nicest restaurants i have been too, where here papa and I sat with our lobster aprons on and our waitress giving us step by step directions how to rip apart our meal. I think we grossed out Joe and Gram a little...

Road Trip Day Two

The weather is still yuck yuck but breakfast was good so I'm happy. The only one who isn't cooperating is tom tom. And he goes dont dodda da!, every time we go over the speed limit. My grandma likes to remind my grandpa of the speed limit every time this happens. Now she's driving and my grandpa is returning the favor, she just ignores him...

We just stopped in Canajoharie, looked like an old western town plopped in foothills. Tom Tom took us to a water fall for our picnic lunch. Ended up just being the side of the road in front of an old farmhouse. Beautiful!

I don't know wether to call them hills or mountains, but we drove through them and they were beautiful! I can't believe how green everything is up here (New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire). Portsmouth, where we are staying, is probably one of the coolest cities I have seen, I didn't want to look because we ride through it next week. We got pretty lost trying to find our hotel, the one on Tom Tom didn't exist and the one I saw from the expressway was next to a roundabout...

It's still gross weather, the guy at the check in counter told us the storm came from the Bahamas and a cold front made it get stuck right above us for who knows how long. He also liked grandpa and the idea of the bike trip and upgraded us to a suite with a kitchen and bathroom bigger than the room we stayed in last night (he wanted to make sure we had room for our bikes, I like him).

Dinner was AMAZING! We ate at the diner in the hotel, beef stew for gram, chicken pot pies and a beer for Gramps and Joe, then a fish sandwich and waffle fries for me. I have never been so full as to turn down chocolate. After G&G taught us a new card game, Phase Ten. It got a little competitive, but in the end Gram kicked our butts. I am really happy because everyone seems to be in good spirits.

P.S. This is a picture of my bike and that little white thing on the spoke is my gum I threw out the window 200 miles ago.

Road Trip Day One

Grace Here,

So I already forgot my passport and ended up stayin in Creek again. Went to a friends and passed out on the couch until their mom kicked me out at three so I went home and snuggled with Alena. Six a.m. came real early and Joe beat me to my grandma's at eight. Their septic tank exploded so Joe and grandpa went to buy a new one and mom and grandma mopped up the flooded basement, I packed the car.

We left at nine. My mom stayed to finish up the basement. Fifteen minutes into the trip I get a message from her that read, Shit. Followed up by a picture of he soaking wet. The pipe above the tank blew up and showered her with water and sand. It was dark and she said she felt like she was in the sinking Titanic, poor Mumma.

The weather is pretty yuck yuck. It's 46 and rainy which made visiting Niagara Falls on the Canadian side a puddle stomping experience. It was still incredibly beautiful in the mist, so much energy for such a little place. My grandpa says they turn the waterfalls off at night, but he likes to pull my leg.

P.S. (by septic tank I meant sump pump)

We made it to Rochester, it's all cold and drizzly out. Joe and I walked to Wendy's to try and find a bar with no luck. I called my friend Dan, who ended up only living four miles from our hotel but he's in Iowa. So I called an old friend from Northern and he only lives five minutes away and he's Gina pick up me and Joe soon to show us the town : )

Anthony took us to a bar with live music and we got Holy Moses's!! Then he took us down town Rochester to the Lux. It was a really neat bar/lounge with arts and crafts and naked lady table legs. Anthony took us the scenic route home, showing us more of Rochester. It wouldn't be an ad place to live.
